Im writing one myself. What u can do best is write out the plot before u start the book. Make a list of the characters u want to put in it and after that is done u start writing.

Basically, the Outline as a writer with no imagination keeps no step forward than anyone else

It's common to change idea's just try to stick with one and see how it goes. if u dont get a flow, then try something a little simpler. This is always a good thing to do..

I have never thought of publishing a book seriously enough, but my stories are so flipping long that I am basically writing one, hahah.

What you can do is take some time to write some drafts on the overal plot. Thatw ay when a new idea comes, it is easy to compare it with the plot you already had without losing the flow.

The first time I tried creating a story I had most of it in my head and I couldn't get out more than a 1/3 because i lost the connections on how my characters where to reach certain parts of the plots. So keep drafts and explain to yourself some of the links involved.

Either way good luck with it.

I can remember writing stories when I was a child and I remember making my own little book with paper stapled together to look like a book :) can honestly say I have never attempted to do it since I have grown older.

Yeah the best thing to do is to find an idea that you really like and just write what comes to mind, in alot of cases it's usually better to base a story for a book on something that has happened in your life that way you have so much to add into it and your ideas can't always change.
